Te Kopahou Reserve

Te Kopahou Reserve is a scenic, conservation and recreation reserve on the south coast of Wellington, on the North Island of New Zealand. Stretching from the suburb of Brooklyn down to the coast at Ōwhiro Bay and westwards to Pariwhero / Red Rocks and Sinclair Head / Rimurapa, the reserve links dense bush-clad gullies with exposed ridgelines and a wild stretch of Cook Strait shoreline. The reserve is anchored by the peaks Te Kopahou (485 m) and Hawkins Hill (495 m), the latter being the highest point in Wellington City. A prominent white radar dome on Hawkins Hill provides primary and secondary surveillance radar for Wellington Airport and the wider region, making the hill both a natural landmark and a piece of working infrastructure. Te Kopahou is best known for its dramatic coastal scenery, panoramic views across Cook Strait toward the South Island, and its accessible network of walking and mountain biking tracks. The southern beaches, including the iconic red rocks and the area known as Devil's Gate, are also home to a colony of New Zealand fur seals, giving the reserve a strong blend of landscape, recreation, and wildlife character right on the edge of the capital.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
