Airo Pai Communal Reserve

The Airo Pai Communal Reserve is a protected area in northern Peru, administered under the country's system of communal reserves that combine biodiversity conservation with the rights and traditional uses of Indigenous peoples. It lies within the Loreto Region, the largest and most Amazonian of Peru's political regions, and spans two provinces: Maynas and Putumayo. The reserve safeguards a mosaic of characteristic Amazonian environments, including upland terra firme forests, palm swamps, and seasonally flooded lowlands that pulse with the rhythms of the regional hydrological cycle. Its creation reflects Peru's approach of using communal reserves to recognize the cultural identity and resource-use practices of local Indigenous communities while placing their territories under formal national protection. Among the species the reserve supports are aquatic mammals and reptiles of great regional importance, including the Amazonian manatee and the giant South American river turtle, as well as the large freshwater fish known as paiche. Beyond its ecological role, Airo Pai is culturally significant for the Secoya and Kichwa communities that continue to use traditional pathways, sacred sites, and subsistence practices within its borders.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
