Arltunga Historical Reserve

Arltunga Historical Reserve is a heritage-protected deserted gold rush town in the Northern Territory of Australia, located roughly 110 kilometres east of Alice Springs on the traditional lands of the Eastern Arrernte people. The reserve preserves the ruins and stone remnants of what was the first substantial European settlement in Central Australia, established in the wake of gold discoveries in the late 1880s and lasting in some form through much of the early twentieth century. The site, also known by its Eastern Arrernte name Arnerre-ntyenge, reflects both the harsh realities of inland frontier mining and the much longer history of Aboriginal presence on this Country. Today it stands as one of the most evocative reminders of Central Australia's gold mining era, with weathered stone buildings that have survived more than a century of extreme arid climate. Beyond its mining heritage, the reserve captures a layered story of contact between European prospectors and the Eastern Arrernte people, whose Country encompasses the site, and of a later mission period that briefly revived the township before it was abandoned once more.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
