Bahía de los Ángeles Biosphere Reserve

Bahía de los Ángeles Biosphere Reserve is a large protected area on the eastern coast of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico, facing the Sea of Cortez. The reserve safeguards nearly 1,500 square miles of coastal desert, islands, islets, and productive marine channels, including the Canal de las Ballenas and Canal de Salsipuedes. The landscape combines arid mountains, sweeping bays, and an archipelago of around 16 islands and islets strung offshore. The region supports a remarkable concentration of marine life, from seasonal whale sharks to sea turtles, California sea lions, and fin whales, while the islands shelter endemic reptiles found nowhere else on Earth. Established in 2007 through a partnership of Mexican conservation authorities and the Global Conservation Fund, the reserve reflects a growing recognition that the central Gulf of California is one of the most biologically productive and ecologically distinctive marine regions in the world.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
