Bird Island Nature Reserve

Bird Island Nature Reserve is a small protected nature reserve sitting roughly 1.4 kilometers off the east coast of New South Wales, Australia, within the Tasman Sea. Located near Lake Munmorah and the Central Coast, the reserve is a compact, roughly circular island of sedimentary rock belonging to the Sydney Basin, with prominent cliffs that rise about 20 meters above the sea and make boat landings difficult. The reserve is best known for its rich seabird life, particularly large breeding colonies of wedge-tailed shearwaters and short-tailed shearwaters, alongside a wider community of shorebirds, terns, petrels, and visiting raptors. Beyond its birds, the island carries low coastal heathland vegetation, small lizard populations, and surrounding waters that host reef fish, sharks, dolphins, and migrating humpback whales. Established in June 1960 and managed as a strict nature reserve by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Bird Island Nature Reserve receives very few visitors and remains a relatively undisturbed offshore refuge. Its combination of isolation, geological history as a once-attached piece of the Australian mainland, and dense marine birdlife gives it a clear ecological identity distinct from the larger mainland parks of the region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
