Cabbage Tree Island (John Gould Nature Reserve)

Cabbage Tree Island, also known as the John Gould Nature Reserve, is a small uninhabited continental island lying roughly 1.4 kilometres off the mouth of Port Stephens on the New South Wales coast of Australia. The island is about one kilometre long and rises abruptly to a rocky ridge, supporting a distinctive vegetation community dominated by cabbage-tree palms and a mix of hardy coastal trees. The reserve is most widely known for its role in the conservation of Gould's petrel, a rare seabird whose main breeding population once faced serious decline due to introduced rabbits, habitat degradation, and predation. Active management since the early 1990s has transformed the island from a fragile remnant colony into one of the most important seabird recovery sites in eastern Australia. Together with neighbouring Boondelbah Island, Cabbage Tree Island is protected as an IUCN Category IV habitat and species management area, with access restricted to scientific and conservation purposes only. Its combination of rugged island geography, specialised vegetation, and globally significant seabird breeding habitat gives it a strong place in Australian offshore island conservation.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
