Campo Verde Flora and Fauna Protection Area

Campo Verde Flora and Fauna Protection Area is a large protected area in northern Mexico, covering roughly 1,080 square kilometers of northwestern Chihuahua near the border with Sinaloa. The reserve sits at the eastern edge of the Sierra Madre Occidental, occupying the ecological transition zone where these mountains give way to the dry expanses of the Chihuahuan Desert. The protected landscape is dominated by oak and pine–oak woodland, a habitat type characteristic of the Sierra Madre Occidental that harbors numerous endemic and range-restricted species. More than 250 plant and animal species have been documented within the reserve, including mammals such as American black bear, puma, and white-tailed deer, and birds such as the eared quetzal, thick-billed parrot, and Gould's wild turkey. Several dozen of these species are classified as being at risk. The area has a long history of formal protection, originally established as a forest reserve and wildlife refuge in 1938 and later reclassified under Mexico's flora and fauna protection area designation in 2003. It is administered by the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) and is classified under IUCN Category VI, recognizing its role in supporting both biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
