Čepkeliai State Nature Reserve

Čepkeliai State Nature Reserve is one of the most important wetland protected areas in Lithuania, located in the Varėna district in the extreme south of the country. It sits directly on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border, defined by the Katra River, and lies adjacent to the Dzūkija National Park on its northern and western sides. The reserve protects an exceptionally large, mostly untouched mire complex dominated by a sphagnum raised bog surrounded by forested inland dunes, lakes, and peatlands that together form a remarkably varied landscape. The reserve's ecological character is defined by the interplay between the open raised bog, its numerous bog lakes and islands, the surrounding sandy dunes, and the bordering river valley. These landforms create a patchwork of habitats that support rare birds, specialist wetland plants, ancient trees, and a wide insect fauna, as well as populations of large mammals such as moose. Recognized internationally through the Ramsar Convention and the European ecological network Natura 2000, Čepkeliai stands out as a flagship site for Lithuanian wetland conservation. Beyond its ecological importance, Čepkeliai is also valued for its quiet, near-primeval atmosphere. Strict protection has allowed peat to continue accumulating, keystone species such as the western capercaillie to persist, and old-growth forest features like hollow pines to remain part of the living landscape. Together, these qualities give Čepkeliai a strong identity as one of the wildest and most distinctive protected natural areas in the Baltic region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
