Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds

The Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds are a remarkable chalk reef lying off the North Norfolk coast in eastern England, in the southern North Sea. Believed to be the largest chalk reef in Europe, the site has been recognised as a Marine Conservation Zone since January 2016, protecting roughly 320 square kilometres of seabed and the diverse marine communities it supports. The reef forms part of a broader chalk bedrock landscape that extends beneath much of the southern North Sea. Movement of sand and sediment continually reveals and conceals the underlying chalk, producing an unusually dynamic marine habitat. Although the protected area takes the name of Cromer, its most dramatic seabed features are found further along the coast near Sheringham. The chalk beds are notable not only for their scale but for their ecological richness. They support more than 700 marine species, including sponges, fish, and invertebrates adapted to a hard chalk substrate that is relatively uncommon in British waters. The combination of geological rarity, biodiversity, and proximity to a heavily used stretch of coastline gives the site strong conservation significance.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
