High desert mountain park with dramatic volcanic rock formations and black bear habitat in Chihuahua

Cumbres de Majalca National Park

Cumbres de Majalca National Park is a protected mountain area in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, situated approximately 88 kilometers northwest of the state capital city. Established by presidential decree on September 1, 1939, the park encompasses 4,772 hectares of rugged high-desert terrain within the Sierra de Majalca, a subrange of the Sierra Madre Occidental. The park is distinguished by its extraordinary volcanic rock formations that have been sculpted by centuries of wind and water erosion, creating dramatic peaks, cliffs, and unusual geological shapes throughout the landscape. The area features a transition between semi-arid steppe zones at lower elevations and humid subtropical conditions at higher altitudes, with mountain peaks reaching around 2,600 meters above sea level. The park is ecologically significant as one of the few remaining habitats in northern Mexico where the American black bear persists, and it supports diverse coniferous forest communities and endemic species adapted to this unique mountainous environment.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
