Deen Maar Indigenous Protected Area

Deen Maar Indigenous Protected Area is an Indigenous Protected Area in south-west Victoria, Australia. It lies on a stretch of land bounded by the Eumeralla River to one side and Bass Strait to the other, with the small township of Yambuk as the nearest town. The reserve covers an area of just over four square kilometres, yet it captures a remarkable variety of coastal environments: limestone ridges, wetlands, shallow lakes, and dunes backed by the Southern Ocean surf. The land is the traditional country of the Peek Whurrong speakers of the Dhauwurdwurung, part of the broader Gunditjmara nation, and the IPA takes its name from the offshore island known as Deen Maar, also called Lady Julia Percy Island. Recognized as an Indigenous Protected Area in 1999, Deen Maar was the first IPA declared in Victoria and reflects the contemporary role of Aboriginal people in managing and protecting culturally and ecologically significant landscapes. Ecologically, the IPA sits within the Yambuk Important Bird Area, recognized by BirdLife International for its importance to threatened species such as the orange-bellied parrot and the hooded plover. The combination of strong Aboriginal cultural heritage, a layered coastal landscape, and recognized conservation value makes Deen Maar a small but unusually rich protected landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
