Dönche

Dönche is a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the southwestern part of the city of Kassel in northern Hesse, Germany, and ranks among the largest inner-city green spaces in the country. The protected area covers roughly 170 hectares of open countryside embedded between residential Kassel neighborhoods, and it is also part of a broader Habitats Directive (FFH) area of about 206 hectares. The landscape combines cultural-historical grassland with ponds, reed beds and tall herb communities, alongside stream-side alder and ash woods and a beech wood pasture. It functions both as a protected nature area and as an accessible walking zone for the surrounding city, threaded by circular trails rather than roads, with grazing sheep and hardy cattle used to keep the open habitats intact. Its character is shaped by more than six centuries of changing human use, from medieval field rental and communal grazing to twentieth-century military training ground, before becoming one of Kassel's central ecological and recreational spaces.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
