Dyfi Biosphere

The Dyfi Biosphere is a coastal protected landscape in south-central Wales, centered on the estuary of the River Dyfi where it meets Cardigan Bay. Designated in 1977 and recognized under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere programme, it represents one of the most important estuarine and salt marsh systems in western Britain, while also encompassing the inland valleys, woodlands, and upland that make up its broader catchment. At the heart of the reserve is Cors Fochno, a large expanse of primary raised mire that ranks among the best preserved active raised bogs in the United Kingdom. The surrounding estuary is a classic bar-built system, a sandy, nutrient-poor waterbody with extensive salt marshes, an accreting dune spit at Ynyslas, and feeding grounds of major importance for migratory wildfowl and shorebirds. Together the inland bog and the coastal estuary create a linked mosaic of habitats that is unusually rich for such a compact area. Beyond its ecological character, the Dyfi Biosphere is also shaped by long-running human activity. Pastoral farming, forestry, tourism, environmental education, and ongoing monitoring all take place within its boundaries, reflecting the biosphere reserve model that blends conservation with sustainable land use. The area also holds Ramsar status, underlining its international significance for wetland birds and migratory species.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
