Kazakhstan's classic Hipparion fauna fossil site along the Irtysh River

Gusiny Perelet

Gusiny Perelet is a paleontological natural monument located on the right bank of the Irtysh River within the city of Pavlodar, in northeastern Kazakhstan. It consists of an exposed geological section, roughly 200 to 800 meters long depending on the source, that contains the remains of animals belonging to the Hipparion fauna, an extinct community of mammals that lived several million years ago. The site's fossils are approximately 4 to 4.5 million years old, making it one of the most important Late Neogene fossil localities in Central Asia. The monument is best known for the remarkable diversity of its assemblage, which includes more than 60 vertebrate species representing classic Hipparion fauna animals such as Chilotherium, Sinotherium, Machairodus (saber-toothed cats), Lagomerix, Samotherium, and a wide variety of rodents. As a protected site of republican significance, it stands as both a scientific reference point for understanding Neogene mammal evolution in the region and a cultural landmark for the city of Pavlodar. In recent years, Gusiny Perelet has gained new public significance through the opening of an open-air museum on site in 2019, marking a transition from purely scientific excavation to public interpretation of one of Kazakhstan's most significant paleontological treasures.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
