Kamanai Strict Nature Reserve

Kamanai Strict Nature Reserve is a protected wetland and forest complex in the Akmenė district of northwestern Lithuania, established in 1979. Covering roughly 3,935 hectares of core reserve area surrounded by a buffer zone of about 2,530 hectares, it safeguards the largest and most valuable plain-bog system of northern Lithuania, with peatlands making up around two thirds of the territory. The reserve centers on the Kamanai raised bog, a landscape of mineral ridges, quaking mires, and more than 120 small bog pools, framed by spruce-dominated forests with pine and birch stands along the edges. Its ecological importance is reflected in the many rare plants, birds, and other species recorded here, including several listed in Lithuania's Red Data Book. Designated at the highest level of protection under IUCN Category Ia, Kamanai functions as a strictly protected natural reference area where natural ecological processes are allowed to continue with minimal human interference. A visitor center near Akmenė II provides the main gateway for public engagement with the reserve.
