Map protected geography along the Ural River’s floodplain corridor

Compare protected landscapes around Kirsanov Sanctuary across the Ural River floodplain

Kirsanov Sanctuary forms a long, narrow corridor along the Ural River, weaving active channels, backwaters, oxbow lakes, islands, willow-poplar gallery forest, wet meadow, and a dry steppe margin across West Kazakhstan. The nearby map shows surrounding protected records while keeping their river connectivity, wildlife evidence, management, and designations separate.

Kirsanov Sanctuary

Kirsanov Sanctuary is a state-protected natural area in the West Kazakhstan region, centered on the floodplain and valley of the Ural River, known locally as the Zhayyk. Covering approximately 61,000 hectares, it stretches in a long corridor about 50 kilometers long and roughly 10 kilometers wide. The reserve was created in 1967 with the specific aim of conserving Eurasian beaver populations, which at the time survived along the Ural River, and of supporting their reintroduction to other parts of Kazakhstan. In 1986, the area was redesignated as a complex sanctuary of republican (national) significance, broadening its mandate beyond a single species to include the wider river-valley ecosystem. Today it remains one of only three republican-level complex sanctuaries in Kazakhstan. Its combination of floodplain forests, meadows, steppe fringes, backwater channels, and oxbow lakes supports a rich mix of mammals, birds, and fish, while ongoing conservation work includes annual beaver counts, salt-lick sites for ungulates, and the installation of nesting structures for birds.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
