Map protected geography around Admiralty Island’s old-growth coastal rainforest

Map surrounding protected landscapes from Kootznoowoo Wilderness across Alaska's fjord coast

Kootznoowoo Wilderness protects the mountainous, fjord-indented heart of Admiralty Island, where steep slopes plunge to a fragmented coast beneath old-growth Sitka spruce and hemlock, mossy salmon streams, beaver ponds, and estuarine flats. Kootznoowoo Wilderness

Kootznoowoo Wilderness is a large federally designated wilderness area occupying most of Admiralty Island in Southeast Alaska. It lies within the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service as part of Tongass National Forest and Admiralty Island National Monument. The wilderness stretches across roughly 979,000 acres of temperate rainforest, deep fjords, forested valleys, and rugged coastline. Ecologically, Kootznoowoo stands apart from the glacier-and-tundra landscapes that dominate much of Alaska. Its old-growth forests of Sitka spruce and western hemlock form dense, cathedral-like canopies above a lush understory of ferns and mosses. These forests support an unusually dense population of brown bears, a distinct subspecies of coastal gray wolf, and a rich assemblage of salmon, eagles, deer, and other wildlife characteristic of the Pacific Northwest coastal rainforest. For visitors and researchers, Kootznoowoo represents one of the clearest expressions of Southeast Alaska's temperate rainforest, combining near-inaccessible wilderness with a remarkably high concentration of megafauna. Its protected status preserves both an intact coastal ecosystem and the cultural landscape of the Tlingit communities who have lived on and around Admiralty Island for millennia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
