Kuiu Wilderness

The Kuiu Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area on Kuiu Island in southeast Alaska, part of the larger Tongass National Forest along the state's iconic Inside Passage. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, it preserves tens of thousands of acres of undeveloped coastal land, making it one of the largest roadless wilderness blocks in the Alexander Archipelago. The landscape is shaped by the same forces that define much of coastal southeast Alaska: a legacy of intense glaciation has carved deep fjords and steep mountain ridges across the island. Within the wilderness, dense Pacific temperate rainforest climbs from sheltered estuaries up through muskeg wetlands and into subalpine meadows at higher elevations, creating a layered mosaic of habitats unusually compressed by elevation. What makes the Kuiu Wilderness especially significant is its combination of ecological richness and its sense of remote wilderness character. Because the area is accessible only by boat or floatplane, it remains largely untouched by roads or large-scale facilities, anchoring a wild coastal landscape that has supported both indigenous Tlingit communities and a continuing tradition of backcountry recreation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
