Lake Pátzcuaro

Lake Pátzcuaro is a high-elevation freshwater lake in the state of Michoacán, Mexico, sitting roughly 2,000 metres above sea level within an endorheic volcanic basin. Surrounded by steep volcanic mountains and fringed by extensive wetlands, the lake supports a rich ecological community that includes endemic fish, the famous Lake Pátzcuaro salamander (ajolote), and a Ramsar-designated wetland complex recognized internationally since 2005. The lake is the cultural and historical heart of the Purépecha people, whose leaders once used the basin as the core of the Tarascan state that rivaled the Aztec Empire. Islands such as Janitzio and Pacanda carry deep cultural meaning, and towns including Pátzcuaro, Tzintzuntzan, Erongarícuaro, and Quiroga line the lake shore with strong indigenous, colonial, and artisanal traditions. Despite its scenic, ecological, and cultural importance, Lake Pátzcuaro has faced serious environmental decline over recent decades due to deforestation, agricultural runoff, water diversion, pollution, sedimentation, and invasive species. Ongoing conservation, restoration, and community efforts are working to preserve both the lake's biodiversity and its role as a centerpiece of Purépecha heritage.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
