Compare protected geography around a sheltered Firth of Clyde marine inlet

Trace surrounding protected landscapes from Lamlash across Arran and the Firth of Clyde

Lamlash Bay forms a naturally sheltered bowl between Arran's curving eastern coastline and the rugged slopes of Holy Isle, with calm water, rocky margins, a long seafront, views toward the Firth of Clyde, and maerl habitat below the surface. The nearby map places surrounding marine and terrestrial protections without conflating their rules, boundaries, or environments.

Lamlash Bay

Lamlash Bay is a sheltered coastal inlet on the eastern side of the Isle of Arran, opening onto the Firth of Clyde and facing Holy Isle just offshore. The bay was historically valued as a natural harbour that could shelter large fleets, and it remains the administrative focus of Arran and a hub for tourism, RNLI lifeboat operations, and seasonal ferries to Holy Isle. Within the bay lies a community-led Marine Protected Area: a No Take Zone in the northern portion of Lamlash Bay, established in 2008 as Scotland's first such zone and the first Marine Protected Area in Scotland to result from a grassroots campaign. The protected waters safeguard maerl seaweed beds and broader marine biodiversity, alongside a broader southern marine area recognised as one of Scotland's Mature Conservation Marine Protected Areas. Beyond its marine ecological value, Lamlash Bay is shaped by the long sweep of Lamlash village along its shore, set against the distinctive profile of Holy Isle. The combination of sheltered sea, Holy Isle views, historic architecture along the seafront, and an active marine protection project makes the bay a focal coastal landscape of North Ayrshire.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
