Northern Pegasus Bay

Northern Pegasus Bay is a regional park administered by Environment Canterbury along the northern stretch of Pegasus Bay on New Zealand's South Island. It extends north from the Waimakariri River along a long chain of sandy and pebbly beaches, river mouths, estuaries, and dune systems, bordering the communities of Kairaki, The Pines Beach, Woodend, Waikuku, Leithfield, and Amberley. The park is notable for its coastal and estuarine habitats, particularly the Ashley Rakahuri Estuary, which is regarded as a significant bird site on the South Island's east coast. Native species such as spotted shags, white-fronted terns, banded dotterels, and the endangered wrybill are regularly found in the reserve, alongside seasonal migrations of Arctic-nesting shorebirds from the Northern Hemisphere. Beyond its ecological values, the park functions as a public recreation area supporting swimming, surfing, land sailing, fishing, cycling, and picnicking. A series of management actions, including vehicle restrictions and drone controls, have been introduced in recent years to balance public use with conservation, especially around sensitive estuarine areas and dune systems.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
