A Natura 2000 marine sanctuary in Poland's Pomeranian Bay

Ostoja na Zatoce Pomorskiej

Ostoja na Zatoce Pomorskiej is a marine Site of Community Importance in the southern Baltic Sea, designated under the European Union's Natura 2000 network. Covering more than 243,000 hectares of open sea off the northwestern Polish coast, it comprises essentially the entire Polish portion of the Pomeranian Bay, stretching from the eastern breakwater of the port of Świnoujście eastward to the spit of Lake Resko Przymorskie near Dźwirzyno. The site was established to safeguard natural habitats and populations of rare and threatened animal species, with a particular focus on marine biodiversity rather than terrestrial wildlife. Its protected habitats include shallow sandy underwater banks permanently covered by seawater, and its waters are a critical habitat for Baltic populations of several protected fauna, including the harbor porpoise and the twaite shad. Beyond its ecological significance, the site also overlaps almost entirely with a separate bird protection area (Zatoka Pomorska), reinforcing its importance as a key area for seabirds, waterbirds, wintering divers, and migratory seaducks in the Polish maritime zone.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
