Normandie-Maine Regional Geological Nature Reserve

The Normandie-Maine Regional Geological Nature Reserve is a regional nature reserve located in the Normandy region of northwestern France. Although one of the smallest regional nature reserves in France, it holds significant national geological value as a protected site of Ordovician limestone containing well-preserved conodont microfossils. The reserve centers on the Carrière des Vaux, a small abandoned limestone quarry in the commune of Saint-Hilaire-la-Gérard, within the broader Parc naturel régional Normandie-Maine. Its importance lies primarily in stratigraphy and biostratigraphy: the conodonts recovered from its limestone layers have allowed detailed dating and correlation of Ordovician sequences across the Armorican Massif. Managed by the regional natural park since its official classification in 2009, the reserve also serves an educational role, opening part of the site to the public so visitors can directly observe fossil-bearing limestone blocks. Its modest size belies its standing as a nationally recognized reference point in French Paleozoic geology.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
