Rhäzünser Rheinauen

Rhäzünser Rheinauen is a protected river landscape on the lower Hinterrhein in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, covering about 157 hectares of one of the largest floodplain areas in the canton. The reserve lies just upstream of the confluence with the Vorderrhein near Reichenau, where the Hinterrhein still flows as a wild, natural river through a post-glacial valley, rather than the straightened channel seen further upstream in the Domleschg. Designated as a floodplain of national importance in 1992, the area preserves a dynamic river system of meandering and braided channels, gravel islands, softwood and hardwood floodplain forest, and adjacent wetlands that together host more than a thousand plant species and a rich community of invertebrates, fish, amphibians, birds, and mammals. The surrounding cultural landscape, with the historic village of Rhäzüns, the castle hill, the early Romanesque church of Sogn Gieri, and the ruins of Hochjuvalt, is itself part of the broader protected setting, having been listed as a landscape of national significance since 1977.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
