Rock River Canyon Wilderness

Rock River Canyon Wilderness is a 4,640-acre roadless wilderness area within the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Located in Alger County, the unit protects a deeply carved sandstone canyon landscape defined by the Rock River and its tributary, Silver Creek. The wilderness is recognized as a showcase of natural forest succession in a region whose surrounding national forest lands have otherwise been managed for timber production. The area is distinguished by two small sandstone canyons roughly 150 feet deep, the dramatic Rock River Falls waterfall, the compact Ginpole Lake, and a network of streams flowing toward Lake Superior. Together these features form a quiet, lake-bound watershed that contrasts sharply with the more heavily managed portions of the surrounding national forest. Though relatively small and lightly visited, the wilderness plays an important ecological role by preserving an unmanaged, second-growth forest template that allows natural processes to operate without active timber harvest. It offers backcountry character, secluded river corridors, and representative Upper Peninsula wildlife, including black bear and whitetail deer.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
