Roseggletscher

The Roseggletscher is a small valley glacier on the northern side of the Bernina range, in the canton of Graubünden in southeastern Switzerland. It drains a high accumulation zone straddling the Italian-Swiss border near Piz Glüschaint and the ridge known as I Gemelli, and from there flows northward into the upper Val Roseg, where its meltwater feeds the Rosegbach, the Flaz, and ultimately the Inn. In its upper accumulation area the Roseggletscher is joined to the neighbouring Sellagletscher (Vadret da la Sella), which descends from the steep western flank of Piz Roseg. Historically the two ice bodies reached close to the present Hotel Roseg during the Little Ice Age, but both have retreated substantially since then. Their separation in the mid-twentieth century created a tongue-basin lake, the Lej da Vadret, which now lies between the tongues of the Roseggletscher and the Tschiervagletscher. Today the glacier is a compact but well-documented example of an Alpine valley glacier undergoing strong twentieth- and twenty-first-century shrinkage. It is closely studied, easily observed from the valley, and forms part of the broader Bernina glacier landscape that includes the Morteratsch, Pers, Cambrena, and Palü glaciers.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
