Malaysia's largest natural coastal wetland, a mosaic of mangroves, peat swamp, and brackish lagoon.
Setiu Wetlands State Park
Setiu Wetlands State Park is a protected coastal wetland complex in Setiu District, Terengganu, on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Spread across roughly 23,000 hectares, it is the largest natural wetland system on the Malaysian east coast, combining freshwater, brackish, and marine environments together with a long coastal lagoon.
The defining character of the area lies in the unusual density of interconnected ecosystems packed into a single landscape. Within Setiu, sea, beach, mudflat, lagoon, estuary, river, coastal forest, island, and mangrove habitats all meet, creating transitions that are rarely found together elsewhere in Malaysia. This ecological richness sits alongside a long cultural tradition of fishing and aquaculture that continues to shape local livelihoods.
Setiu was officially gazetted as the first state park of Terengganu on 10 May 2018. Its designation reflects both the biological value of the wetland and a strategic effort to protect the area for conservation, scientific study, and carefully managed ecotourism, while still supporting the surrounding fishing communities.
