Sierra de San Juan Biosphere Reserve

The Sierra de San Juan Biosphere Reserve is a protected area in the state of Nayarit in western Mexico, established as a Special Biosphere Reserve in 2003. It safeguards a portion of the Sierra de San Juan, a forested mountain range that lies between the city of Tepic and the Pacific coast, just 22 kilometers to the west. The reserve sits at the western end of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and includes twin stratovolcanoes, Volcán San Juan and Cerro Alto, whose elevation and proximity to the ocean create sharply contrasted wet and dry ecological zones. Within its roughly 198 square kilometers, the reserve protects an unusually rich gradient of plant communities, ranging from Jalisco and Sinaloan dry forests at lower elevations to pine forests, oak forests, cloud forest, and high grassland at higher altitudes. These higher forests represent a southern outlier of the Sierra Madre Occidental pine-oak forests and contain many rare and locally endemic plants. The combination of volcanic terrain, strong elevation gradients, and coastal moisture supports more than 200 bird species and 34 recorded mammal species, making the reserve an important biological corridor between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Pacific lowlands.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
