A mountain biosphere reserve in the northeast of the Community of Madrid, Spain, protecting some of Europe's southernmost beech forests.
Sierra del Rincón
Sierra del Rincón is a protected mountain territory in the far northeast of the Community of Madrid, Spain, sitting between the Sierra de Ayllón and the Sierra de Guadarrama ranges within the broader Sierra Norte comarca. Recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve in 2005 and expanded in 2022, it covers roughly 15,200 hectares across six small mountain municipalities, including La Hiruela, Horcajuelo de la Sierra, Montejo de la Sierra, Prádena del Rincón, Puebla de la Sierra, and Madarcos.
The reserve is defined by an unusually rich mosaic of forest and upland habitats for its latitude: pine woodlands, Pyrenean oak forests, holm oak stands, southern beech groves, grasslands, broom-dominated highland shrublands, and Mediterranean scrub all coexist within a relatively compact area. This ecological compression has made Sierra del Rincón a significant reference point for understanding the transitional landscape between the Iberian Central System and the foothills that connect it to the northern meseta.
Its best-known feature is the famous Hayedo de Montejo, one of the most southerly beech woods in Europe and a National Natural Site of Interest since 1974. Combined with deeply traditional mountain villages, ancient oak dehesas, and an open-air sculpture park in Puebla de la Sierra, the reserve blends ecological conservation with a strong cultural and rural heritage dimension.
