Tabin Wildlife Reserve

Tabin Wildlife Reserve is a major nature preserve in the eastern lowlands of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, occupying the central part of the Dent Peninsula that forms the northern headland of Darvel Bay. Established in 1984 with the explicit goal of safeguarding Sabah's vanishing wild animals, the reserve consists of lowland dipterocarp forest and covers roughly 1,225 square kilometers of contiguous jungle, mud volcanoes, and riverine habitat. The reserve is best known as one of the most important strongholds in Sabah for the three largest mammals still found on the island: the Bornean elephant, the Bornean rhinoceros, and the tembadau, a wild relative of the banteng. It also supports seven of Sabah's eight primate species, a full community of smaller carnivores, and hundreds of recorded bird species, making it both a conservation anchor and a center for low-impact wildlife tourism. Managed under Sabah Parks with the Sabah Wildlife Department acting as custodian of its fauna and the Sabah Forestry Department responsible for its forests, Tabin has emerged as a model destination for jungle trekking, nocturnal wildlife drives, and viewing natural mud volcanoes where animals gather to seek mineral-rich soil.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
