Vienna Woods

The Vienna Woods, known in German as the Wienerwald, are a range of forested highlands that form the northeastern foothills of the Northern Limestone Alps, marking the northeastern terminus of the Alpine chain. They stretch across roughly 45 kilometres in length and 20 to 30 kilometres in width through the states of Lower Austria and Vienna, with their eastern edges reaching into the city of Vienna itself. The range is a protected landscape and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, serving as one of the most important natural recreation areas for the densely populated greater Vienna region. The landscape combines sandstone flysch hills in the north with limestone formations in the south, producing a mix of broadleaf and coniferous forest, rolling valleys, deep gorges, viewpoints over the Vienna Basin, and historic sites including caves, monasteries, and castle ruins. Despite long-standing protection, the Vienna Woods continue to face pressures from urban sprawl radiating outward from the capital. The Vienna Woods carry strong cultural weight as a symbol of Viennese leisure life, a setting immortalised in poetry, music, and folk tradition, and a region where imperial history, religious heritage, and contemporary outdoor recreation meet.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
