Wakatobi National Park

Wakatobi National Park is a marine protected area in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, established in 2002 and spanning approximately 13,900 square kilometers. The park encompasses the four major islands of the Tukangbesi Archipelago: Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko, along with numerous smaller islands and extensive coastal waters. The name Wakatobi is a portmanteau derived from the first syllables of these four islands. The park is situated between the Banda Sea to the northeast and the Flores Sea to the southwest, creating a unique marine environment that Jacques Cousteau famously described as an "Underwater Nirvana." This archipelago represents the largest barrier reef system in Indonesia and forms part of the globally significant Coral Triangle, hosting an extraordinary concentration of marine biodiversity.
