Zaybaykalsky National Park

Zaybaykalsky National Park occupies the middle section of Lake Baikal's eastern shore in the Republic of Buryatia, Russia. Established in 1986, the park protects a diverse landscape that includes the steep western slopes of the Barguzin mountains, the iconic Svyatoy Nos peninsula, and the Ushkany Islands archipelago in the middle of the lake. This protected area spans approximately 269,000 hectares, making it one of the larger national parks in the Russian Federation. The park lies within the East Siberian taiga ecoregion, characterized by harsh subarctic climate with long, very cold winters and brief but warm summers. The landscape is predominantly steep, with over half of the park's terrain exceeding 26 degrees in slope. The Svyatoy Nos peninsula, the only large peninsula on Lake Baikal, extends 53 kilometers into the lake and contains its own mountain complex rising 1,422 meters above the water. The park encompasses both terrestrial and aquatic environments, including 38.8 square kilometers of protected lake waters.
