Small Natura 2000 habitat site protecting rare xerothermic grassland flora in the Lublin Upland

Żmudź

Żmudź is a small designated habitat protection area in eastern Poland, classified as a Site of Community Importance under the European Union's Natura 2000 network. Located in the Lubelskie Voivodeship near the village of Żmudź-Kolonia in Chełm County, the site covers roughly 44 hectares of chalk- and limestone-rich terrain at the edge of the Lublin Upland. The area is built around the earlier Żmudź Nature Reserve and extends into surrounding semi-natural xerothermic grasslands belonging to the Festuco-Brometea class, with patches of juniper scrub and scattered Scots pine on dry, sun-exposed slopes. Its ecological importance lies less in size than in the rarity of the plant communities it shelters, including the country's largest known population of golden flax and internationally significant stands of lady's slipper orchid and Pannonian thistle. Although too small to function as a recreational destination, Żmudź is a scientifically valuable reference site for dry-grassland conservation in Poland and illustrates how very localized habitats can hold disproportionate biodiversity value when alkaline substrates meet traditional low-intensity land use.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
