Aammiq Wetland

Aammiq Wetland is the largest remaining freshwater wetland in Lebanon, representing a precious remnant of the extensive marshes and lakes that once covered much of the Bekaa Valley. Located on the eastern edge of Mount Lebanon approximately 7 kilometers south-southwest of Qab Elias, this wetland stretches in a long strip from the foot of the Barouk mountain ridge eastward to the Litani River. The wetland covers approximately 253 hectares of reedbeds and open pools, with water supplied by rain and snow falling on the Barouk mountain to the west. The site has been recognized internationally as a Ramsar Convention protected wetland since 1999 and was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2005 alongside the Al Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve. The wetland lies along one of the world's most important bird migration routes, making it a critical stopover point for countless migratory species traversing the Middle East.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
