Airag Lake

Airag Lake is a freshwater lake in the Zavkhan sum of Uvs Province in western Mongolia, set within the broad, flat expanse of the Great Lakes Depression. It belongs to a chain of interconnected steppe lakes that includes Khar-Us, Khar, Dörgön, and ultimately Khyargas Lake, receiving water from the Zavkhan and Khüngüin rivers before passing it on through a short outflow canal. Although the lake is shallow and modest in size, it covers roughly 143 square kilometers, and its unusual thermal behavior sets it apart from neighboring lakes. In summer the water column warms almost to the bottom, while in winter temperatures remain around 1 to 2.5 degrees Celsius, and the main outflow canal stays unfrozen. The lake is recognized internationally as a Ramsar Wetland of Importance under the name Ayrag Nuur.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
