Alakol Nature Reserve

Alakol Nature Reserve is a state-protected natural area in southeastern Kazakhstan, focused on conserving the natural complexes of the Tentek River delta and the islands of Lake Alakol. It lies across the Urdzhar district of Abay Region and the Alakol district of Zhetisu Region, in the desert basin between the Dzungarian Alatau and Tarbagata mountain ranges. The reserve's defining identity is its role as a major refuge for colonial waterbirds and shorebirds in Central Asia. Lake Alakol and the surrounding Alakol-Sasykkol lake system sit on a key Central Asian-Indian flyway, and the reserve's islands and deltas host one of the region's most important concentrations of pelicans, cormorants, spoonbills, herons, and, most notably, the rare relict gull. Established in 1998 and recognized internationally through the Ramsar Convention in 2009 and the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme in 2013, the reserve combines lake, delta, island, and steppe-desert ecosystems in a single protected network. It is a place where arid Central Asian landscapes meet rich wetland biodiversity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
