Balandra Flora and Fauna Protection Area

The Balandra Flora and Fauna Protection Area is a federally designated natural protected area on the coast of Baja California Sur in northwestern Mexico. It lies within the municipality of La Paz, just north of the state capital of the same name, bordering the Gulf of California. The reserve was officially created on November 30, 2012, and covers roughly 2,500 hectares of coastal wetland ecosystem. Balandra is defined by the combination of calm sandy beaches, shallow coastal lagoons, and extensive mangrove stands, with three species of mangrove forming the core vegetation of the protected wetlands. Inland pockets of arid Baja California vegetation, including ironwood and protected cactus species, add a desert coastal character to the surrounding landscape. The area is recognized internationally as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California." Beyond its ecological value, Balandra has deep historical resonance. Archaeological evidence shows human presence stretching back more than two millennia, and the bay was historically a focal point of indigenous Pericú settlement before Spanish colonization in the sixteenth century. Today, it stands as one of the most accessible natural showcases of Baja California Sur's Gulf coast ecosystems.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
