Elafonisi

Elafonisi is a small island and protected nature reserve lying just off the southwestern tip of Crete, in the Libyan Sea near the boundary of the Chania regional unit. Separated from the mainland by a narrow, shallow lagoon-like channel roughly 150 meters wide, the island can often be reached on foot through knee-deep water when conditions are calm, giving visitors the impression of walking across the sea to reach it. The island's defining natural feature is its celebrated pink sand beaches, created when wave and tidal action break down pigmented microorganisms that live in symbiosis with native seaweeds. Beyond its famously colored shores, Elafonisi protects an unusual combination of coastal dune systems, low phrygana scrub, and rocky limestone outcrops, and together with the opposite mainland coast it forms a Natura 2000 site and a designated landscape of outstanding natural beauty. Elafonisi is also a place of strong historical memory. A memorial plaque and the remains of a small chapel mark a tragic episode from the Greek War of Independence in 1824, while a large wooden cross commemorates the victims of the 1907 wreck of the Austrian Lloyd steamer Imperatrix, whose passengers are buried on the island.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
