Festberg bei Philippinenthal

Festberg bei Philippinenthal is a small nature reserve in the northern part of the German state of Hesse, located near the town of Wolfhagen in the Kassel district. It protects a steep southwest-facing slope and part of the ridge of the Festberg, a roughly 330 meter hill formed of Lower Muschelkalk limestone whose tilted strata rise sharply above the valley of the Lohbach stream. The reserve is notable for its calcareous grassland habitats, which are rare in this part of north Hesse. Historic grazing by sheep and goats maintained open, semi-dry vegetation, and although the landscape began to scrub over after traditional use ended, conservation grazing with Heidschnucken and goats has been reintroduced to restore the characteristic flora. Recognized both as a German nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet, protected since 1992) and as a European Fauna-Flora-Habitat site (FFH-Gebiet, designated in 2004), the area combines orchid-rich limestone grassland, juniper heath, shrubby calcareous thickets, a small section of alder-ash floodplain forest along the Lohbach, and surrounding orchard meadows, making it a compact but ecologically layered protected landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
