Fungus Rock

Fungus Rock is a small limestone islet at the entrance to the almost circular black lagoon of Dwejra, on the western coast of Gozo in the Maltese archipelago. The rock rises about 60 metres above the sea and is surrounded by deep blue waters, making it one of the most recognizable landmarks along the Gozitan coastline. Although it is tiny, the islet has long carried an outsize reputation tied to a strange parasitic plant that once grew on its flat upper surface. The rock is most famous for the so-called Maltese fungus, Cynomorium coccineum, a parasitic flowering plant that was believed by early modern doctors to have powerful medicinal uses. The Knights Hospitaller, who once controlled Malta, valued the plant so highly that they restricted access to the rock and even stationed a permanent guard there. Today Fungus Rock sits within a protected nature reserve, and the surrounding shoreline attracts snorkelers and divers drawn by clear water and dramatic underwater geology. For centuries the rock stood alongside the natural rock arch known as the Azure Window as the signature scenery of Dwejra. After the Azure Window collapsed into the sea in March 2017, Fungus Rock took on renewed importance as a defining landmark of the area's now deeply altered coastal landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
