Established in 1964, the park occupies part of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range northwest of Chilapa de Álvarez, within an area known as El Ocotal. The park covers approximately 528 hectares of rugged terrain featuring elevations that rise to around 2,500 meters above sea level, with topography ranging from rolling hillsides to steep ravines and canyons. The area is named in honor of Juan Álvarez, a Mexican general and former president of Mexico, reflecting the tradition of commemorating national figures through protected area designations. The park forms part of a critical watershed system, with its ravines feeding tributaries that eventually flow into the Atzacualoya River, then the Mezcala River, and ultimately the Balsas River basin.
