Established on March 9, 1992, the reserve spans 17.4 square kilometers and holds IUCN category Ib designation as a wilderness area. The reserve is renowned for its exceptional stands of cedar of Lebanon trees, representing approximately 20 percent of the remaining cedar forests in the country, making it a cornerstone of Lebanon's natural and cultural heritage. The high-precipitation environment supports remarkably diverse ecosystems, with over 1,058 plant species recorded, accounting for nearly 40 percent of all native plant species in Lebanon despite the reserve representing less than 0.1 percent of the country's total area. The forest also contains the country's last protected community of wild apple trees, alongside mixed stands of juniper and fir, creating a unique ecological assemblage that draws international scientific interest.
