Île du Grand Connétable National Nature Reserve

The Île du Grand Connétable National Nature Reserve encompasses two small rocky islands, Grand Connétable and Petit Connétable, located approximately 18 kilometers offshore from the estuary of the Approuague River in French Guiana, France. These completely treeless cliff islands emerge dramatically from the coastal waters and represent the first nature reserve established in French Guiana, designated on 8 December 1992. The reserve protects not only the terrestrial islands but also a substantial surrounding marine perimeter extending five kilometers outward, creating a comprehensive coastal protected area of approximately 78.5 square kilometers. The islands hold significant ecological importance as a critical nesting and breeding habitat for numerous seabird species, particularly tropical terns and frigatebirds, while also supporting marine turtle populations and coastal dolphin species in the surrounding waters.
