Lake Alaotra

Lake Alaotra is the largest lake in Madagascar, lying on the northern part of the island's central plateau within the Alaotra-Mangoro region. Its basin is composed of shallow freshwater lakes and marshes ringed by dense vegetation, and it forms the center of the country's most important rice-growing area. The broader wetland system of around 7,200 square kilometres combines open water, reedbeds, marshes, and cultivated rice paddies, supporting a distinctive mix of habitats in an otherwise heavily altered landscape. The lake is internationally significant as a refuge for rare and endemic wildlife, most famously the Alaotra gentle lemur, which lives almost entirely in the surrounding reedbeds. It is also one of the most threatened wetland systems in Madagascar, suffering from deforestation-driven sedimentation, reedbed burning, and rapidly shrinking populations of several endemic bird species. Recognized globally, the lake and its catchment were formally designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
