Bhutan's living sanctuary for the takin, the nation's legendary national animal

Motithang Takin Preserve

Motithang Takin Preserve is a small but significant wildlife sanctuary located in the Motithang district of Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Established on the edge of the city, the preserve provides a protected environment for the Bhutan takin, a vulnerable species of goat-antelope that holds extraordinary cultural significance as the national animal of Bhutan. The preserve originated from a former mini-zoo that was converted into a natural habitat after the King of Bhutan ordered the release of the animals on religious and environmental grounds, reflecting Bhutan's Buddhist values of compassion toward all living beings. What makes this preserve unique is that the takin, having become semi-domesticated during their time in captivity, refused to leave the immediate area even when given the opportunity to return to the wild, ultimately requiring the establishment of a dedicated enclosed forest habitat.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
