Nevado de Toluca National Park

Nevado de Toluca National Park is a protected natural area in central Mexico, centered around the extinct volcano of the same name in the State of Mexico. The park encompasses the mountain and its surrounding forested slopes, situated approximately 45 kilometers southwest of Toluca and 135 kilometers from Mexico City. The volcano rises to 4,690 meters above sea level, making it the fourth-highest peak in Mexico. The park was established in 1936 to preserve this volcanic landscape and was later reclassified in 2013 as a Flora and Fauna Protection Area. The defining feature of the park is the large elliptical crater at the summit, which contains two high-altitude lakes known as Laguna del Sol and Laguna de la Luna, the only crater lakes in Mexico. These lakes held significant religious importance during pre-Hispanic periods and continue to be major visitor attractions. The park supports diverse ecosystems ranging from pine and fir forests on the lower slopes to alpine meadows above the tree line, and contains important archaeological sites related to ancient ceremonies.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
