Parnitha National Park

Parnitha National Park protects the largest and highest mountain range in the Attica peninsula, rising just north of Athens. Its dominant peak, Karavola, reaches upper-elevation forest country and gives the park a distinctly alpine feel despite being only about an hour from the capital. Established in 1961 and later integrated into the Natura 2000 network, the park safeguards extensive forests of Greek fir, Aleppo pine, and Mediterranean oak, along with deep karst gorges, caves, and a network of mountain springs. The park is best known today for its role as a green lung for greater Athens and as the only place in Greece with a self-sustaining population of red deer. It is also a major hiking and mountaineering destination, tied to the cultural identity of Attica through ancient mythology, mountain monasteries, and traditional villages around its flanks. Parnitha has been deeply shaped by wildfire, most notably the devastating 2007 blaze that burned the majority of its forest cover. Recovery, reforestation, and the return of large mammals such as wolves and wild boar have made the park a living laboratory for Mediterranean forest resilience.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
