Reserva Natural Barba Azul

Reserva Natural Barba Azul is a privately managed protected area in the northern Bolivian department of Beni, created in 2008 by the conservation NGO Asociación Civil Armonía with a focused mission to save the blue-throated macaw (Ara glaucogularis), a parrot endemic to the Llanos de Moxos and considered one of the rarest macaws in the world. The reserve lies within the vast seasonally flooded savanna of the Beni plain, a landscape defined by gallery forests, scattered forest islands, slow rivers, and an annual cycle of months-long inundation followed by months-long drought. Eleven thousand hectares of this mosaic were set aside to give the blue-throated macaw a secure refuge and to maintain the motacú palm forests on which the species depends for nesting and food. In 2020 the area was formally declared a Reserva Privada de Patrimonio Natural, cementing its conservation status and making it one of the most important privately managed sites for threatened parrots, migratory shorebirds, and savanna mammals in all of Bolivia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
