Taute Marshes Regional Nature Reserve

The Taute Marshes Regional Nature Reserve is a small but ecologically rich protected wetland in the Manche department of Normandy, north-western France. It covers 147 hectares of wet meadows and marshland along the Taute river, within the broader Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Natural Park. The reserve was officially classified in 2011 after more than two decades of land acquisition and habitat stewardship led by the Normandy Ornithological Group (GONm). The site is recognized for its exceptional ornithological diversity, with 140 bird species recorded and a concentration of nesting marshland specialists that is regionally significant, including the Eurasian bittern, marsh harrier, and Montagu's harrier. It also serves as an important stopover for migratory warblers, particularly the rare aquatic warbler, and hosts more than 70 patrimonial plant species across its six separate wetland sectors. Although the reserve itself is closed to the public to protect its fragile habitats, a discovery trail along the nearby Vire and Taute canal offers visitors a chance to experience the character of these marshes without disturbing the wildlife they support.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
